Community School - Parent Letter

Dear Parents/ Guardians

Dawes Comprehensive Gifted Program School has become a Community School! Through collaboration with Metropolitan Family Services, new funding has been secured through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program to create a Community School at Dawes.

What is a Community School?
A community School is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. With the school building as a hub, a Community School brings together many partners offering a wide range of expanded supports and opportunities for students, families and community members before, during and after school. Activities might include but are not limited to: dance, gardening, homework help, psycho educational activities, and a variety of other social and recreational opportunities.

Why are we becoming a Community School?
The Community School will bring new opportunities for everyone in the school. Becoming a community school will allow students, parents and community members to access new resources and to participate in activities for enrichment, recreation and learning. A community school works: to assure that students are ready to learn in order to achieve at high standards, help prepare young people for success after elementary school/ high school, and to help parents and community members become more engaged with the school.

Who is involved in the project?
Metropolitan Family Services has worked with the school administrators to apply for and receive funding for the community school. Metropolitan Family Services has a strong reputation for developing community schools with more than 15 years experience.  Dawes Comprehensive Gifted Program School has been assigned a Resource Coordinator, Ms. Alyse Biszewski, who is based in the school full-time to coordinate all activities.  She is located at the school in room 110. An advisory Board is being formed for the Community School and will include teachers and school staff, administrators, parents, community partners and Metropolitan Family Services staff to guide the implementation of new programs and services.

When will the Community School happen?
The Community School activities have already begun. There were activities during the spring semester of the 2013 school year, and also summer programming during the month of July.  The new activities for the 2014 school year will begin on September 9, 2013.

How is the Community School being developed?
The Community School is being designed to meet the particular needs of the Dawes Community. We welcome each of you to join us in creating the Dawes Community School.

“Funds for this activity were provided by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.”

Community School - Parent Letter-Español

Estimados Padres/ Tutores Legales,
